Michael J. Zammit, CEO, CSB Group

Founded in 1987, CSB Group has grown from a family business into a multi-brand group providing corporate, tax, fiduciary, real estate and yachting services to international clients in Malta. Here, Group CEO Michael J. Zammit explains why the group aims to be the long-term partner of choice for UK businesses and investors.

Q: How has CSB Group evolved since its founding?

My father founded CSB in 1987, and I joined originally on a part-time basis while continuing my studies. In those early years, the business focused on debt collection services, credit status reports and recruitment. Everything I know I learned through direct experience, working across the various units of the business. What has truly transformed the group, though, is what we have built over the last 20 years.

When financial services began to put Malta on the map and made the island attractive to international investors, we saw the opportunity to reposition CSB, not as a locally focused firm, but as the partner of choice for international clients seeking to establish or relocate to Malta and take advantage of its fiscal and regulatory environment.

Q: How has the group expanded its offering for international clients?

In 2009, recognising how closely aligned our offering was with the needs of international businesses, we attracted Regus to provide serviced offices and meeting rooms. Today we operate three centres on the island, one in Swatar, directly beneath our head office, and two in St Julian’s. These serve international clients who need a professional base from which to operate.

In 2013, we secured the Sotheby’s International Realty franchise, bringing an internationally recognised luxury real estate brand to Malta. This allows us to serve clients across both residential and commercial property markets, whether they are looking to buy, sell or rent. This integration made natural sense, given that Malta’s various residence programmes are typically linked to property ownership or rental.

We continue to invest in our people, technology, infrastructure and leadership. We never stand still. We are always evolving, improving and looking ahead.

Q: How do you manage the group’s reputation?

In 2027, we celebrate our 40th anniversary, which is a significant milestone for any professional services firm. We are a family-owned and run business, and that means we feel personally accountable for the quality of services we provide. Our long-term perspective is grounded in reputation and credibility, which takes time to build. The strong governance structures we have in place, the compliance measures we maintain and the professional integrity of our team all underpin that reputation.

We are entrepreneurs ourselves; however, we are supported by a team of lawyers, accountants, tax professionals, corporate service executives and compliance specialists. It is genuinely in our DNA to treat our clients’ businesses and affairs as though they were our own. That is where we feel we consistently excel.

Q: What sets CSB Group apart in Malta’s corporate services sector?

We have been involved in Malta’s iGaming industry since its inception, dating back to the early 2004 period when the remote gaming regulations were still being introduced. Today, I would say we are arguably the only corporate service provider in Malta offering a fully integrated 360-degree service model. Clients can come to us and we will guide them through every stage of their journey, from corporate structure and governance, through regulatory and compliance requirements, to office space, residential property and residence programmes.

Beyond the breadth of our services, what sets us apart is our entrepreneurial mindset. We understand our clients because we are entrepreneurs ourselves. We build genuine relationships. We want our clients to become part of our extended family, and that approach means referrals come naturally, from colleagues, friends and clients who trust us to look after the people they send our way.

“Innovation and adaptability have consistently driven CSB’s evolution.”

Q: What is driving the launch of UNICO Yachting?

By nature, I enjoy building businesses. I am a boat owner myself, and I identified a genuine opportunity in the market to operate as an independent yacht broker, one not tied to any particular brand. The majority of the high-net-worth clients we serve, both locally and internationally, are property owners, and many of them are also boat owners.

The network we have built and the expertise we hold, including our existing practice supporting clients with Malta flag registration, temporary importation and VAT structuring on vessels, gave us the technical and regulatory foundations to go further. The aspiration is to take UNICO Yachting beyond Maltese shores, given that yachts are inherently mobile assets, and to build our reputation progressively within the wider Mediterranean market.

Q: Where are the greatest opportunities with the UK?

There are strong historical and commercial ties between Malta and the UK, and our position as an English-speaking EU jurisdiction, combined with our strategic location, works very much in our favour. The opportunities span a range of sectors. Family office businesses looking to extend or relocate their structures to Malta represent one clear area. iGaming and financial services remain central, and the growth of fintech and digital assets is creating new demand.

We see the UK as a long-term partner, not simply as a source of individual mandates. Technology and connectivity are making the world smaller, and that reinforces the importance of viewing each market as a sustained relationship rather than a transactional opportunity.

Q: How do you measure success for your clients?

One of our key areas of focus is the early-stage entrepreneur, someone who has a concept and a new business but is still in the startup phase. Because we are multidisciplinary, clients can draw on any element of our service offering without having to take on the full-time overhead of accountants, bookkeepers, financial controllers, tax advisors, legal professionals or payroll specialists. They engage us as they develop and grow, scaling their use of our services in line with their needs.

What I find genuinely satisfying is when a client eventually tells us they no longer need our bookkeeping or regulatory services because they are now recruiting their own team. That is not a loss; it is a measure of success. It demonstrates that Malta’s attractiveness, our service offering and the support we have provided have enabled them to turn a concept into a business model that can grow and flourish beyond its original boundaries.

Q: How does innovation shape CSB Group’s approach?

Innovation and adaptability have consistently driven CSB’s evolution. Our long experience in iGaming has been directly valuable here, because we understand how entrepreneurs running online businesses operate, what kind of reporting they expect and how they want to engage with advisors. That gives us a head start when working with fintech and digital asset clients.

Malta’s priority has always been to attract the right operators, and that discipline has served the country well. We are investing in AI and technology to improve our efficiency, scalability and client experience, so as to anticipate change rather than simply respond to it.

Q: Why is now the right time for UK investors to look at Malta?

Beyond EU membership, an English-speaking workforce and strong international connectivity, Malta offers a proven regulatory infrastructure and an entrepreneurial culture that is genuinely distinctive. Maltese professionals are known for their resilience and determination. We have demonstrated a consistent ability to develop emerging industries and to adapt when circumstances require it.

Our scale is also a practical advantage. You can cover significantly more ground and more meetings in Malta in a single day than you can in a major financial centre. That accessibility, combined with the island’s economic resilience and the expertise of established firms like ours, means that international businesses can genuinely take advantage of what Malta offers, expand their operations and develop new service lines from a stable and well-regulated base.

Q: What legacy do you hope to leave at CSB Group?

We want to keep building on what we have established. Our 40th anniversary is a milestone, not a destination. Our ambitions remain undiminished. The heritage of 40 years of trust and lasting relationships, the continuous diversification into new service lines, the strengthening of our capabilities and expertise, all of this gives us a strong foundation. But we have no intention of resting on it.

We want to keep challenging ourselves to improve and to deliver more. We are proud of how far we have come, but even more excited about where we are going. Our heritage gives us strength, our ambition drives us forward, and our next chapter is already taking shape.
